The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to go on annual leave, clearing the way for Deputy Governor Barr. Bayo Lawal to take charge of the state’s affairs while the governor is away.

The governor’s leave begins Monday, August 10, and runs through September 11, with an official resumption date of September 14, 2026, as stated in his letter to the House.
Lawmakers granted the request during plenary after considering the governor’s formal correspondence, submitted in line with constitutional requirements obligating a governor to inform the legislature before any absence from office.
Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, standing in for Speaker Rt Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, read the governor’s letter to members on Thursday. The House approved it without opposition, voicing confidence that governance would continue smoothly under the deputy governor.
The Deputy Governor Lawal will serve as Acting Governor for the full duration of Makinde’s leave, overseeing the day-to-day running of government to ensure uninterrupted state administration until the governor’s return.
In his remarks following the approval, the Deputy Speaker wished Governor Makinde a restful leave and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining a healthy working relationship with the executive arm. He also praised the deputy governor’s proven ability to lead effectively in an acting capacity, pointing to the state’s stable governance structure as assurance that policy implementation would not be disrupted.
Other lawmakers used the opportunity to commend Governor Makinde for adhering to constitutional procedure, calling his notification to the House a further sign of his respect for democratic norms and the rule of law.
The Assembly has since directed that its approval be formally communicated to the executive arm for appropriate action.
