PHOTOS: Ibadan Poly SDC Club Marks 10 Years of Promoting Sustainable Development

The Sustainable Development Club (SDC) of the Department of Local Government and Development Studies, Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, at The Polytechnic, Ibadan has celebrated its 10th anniversary with a public lecture, awards presentation, and reunion of alumni and current members.

The event, held at the institution’s Assembly Hall, North Campus, brought together students, alumni, academics, and other stakeholders to commemorate a decade of promoting the Sustainable Development Goals through advocacy, community engagement, and leadership development.
The anniversary featured a public lecture titled “Youth as SDG Champion: Turning Passion to Measurable Impact” and attracted several dignitaries, including the Acting Rector, Dr. Taiwo Abideen Lasisi, who was represented by Alhaji Akinyemi Akeem. Other notable guests included Dr. Femi Adedokun, Dr. Ayobami Adesiyan, Dr. Olatunji, Dr. Oladeji, representatives of Wema Bank, and members of the academic community.

In her welcome address, the club’s president, Teniola Idayat Adeniran, described the club as a platform that has transformed students through community service, advocacy, and skills development. She encouraged more students to join the organisation, highlighting its positive impact on members over the past decade.


The Head of the Department of Local Government and Development Studies, Dr. Banji Adepoju, expressed appreciation to the institution’s management and guests for supporting the celebration. He said the club had evolved into a vibrant platform for learning, leadership, advocacy, and community service, adding that its activities had positioned the department on the global map in promoting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

Chairman of the occasion, Dr. Adedokun, congratulated the department and members of the club for sustaining the initiative over the years. According to him, the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies remains committed to academic excellence, character development, and societal relevance, values that align with the objectives of the Sustainable Development Club.


Declaring the anniversary open through his representative, Acting Rector Dr. Lasisi commended the club for building students’ capacity in sustainable development. He reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to technological innovation and sustainable development, promising continued support for departments driving innovative initiatives.

Delivering the anniversary lecture, Ayokunle Omonijo stressed the critical role of young people in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. He praised The Polytechnic, Ibadan, for encouraging students to embrace sustainable practices and urged more students to actively participate in promoting sustainability.

Also speaking, the pioneer Head of the Department, Dr. Adesiyan, congratulated the club on its achievements, while the founder of the Sustainable Development Club, Kolawole Amusat, expressed satisfaction with the club’s progress over the past decade. He noted that many alumni are contributing to sustainable national development, while current members continue to make meaningful impacts within the institution and their communities.


The celebration also featured an awards presentation. Acting Rector Dr. Lasisi received the Grand Ambassador of Sustainable Development Award in recognition of his contributions toward advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) and his commitment to quality education at the institution.
