The House of Representatives on Thursday passed the Executive Bill seeking the establishment of state police, a move considered a major step towards decentralising Nigeria's policing system.

The bill was approved during plenary after lawmakers withdrew an earlier constitutional amendment proposal on state police and adopted the Executive Bill instead.
The development followed the Senate's earlier passage of its version of the legislation, bringing the National Assembly closer to concluding legislative work on the proposed dual policing framework.
The proposed law is expected to create state police outfits alongside the Nigeria Police Force as part of efforts to improve internal security, tackle crime more effectively and strengthen law enforcement across the country.
The passage of the bill marks a significant milestone in the long-running debate over state policing, which has been championed by stakeholders as a solution to Nigeria's growing security challenges.
