The death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has sparked fresh controversy online as some supporters of Peter Obi, NDC presidential candidate, known as Obidients, have taken to social media to mock the late star over his open support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 presidential campaign.

NAIJA METRO NEWS had reported that Ogogo, 66, passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after a brief public battle with stage-four cancer.
His remains were interred on Monday in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, according to Islamic rites.
The actor had been a vocal backer of Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the lead-up to the 2023 elections and maintained that support in subsequent years.
Within hours of the announcement of his death, posts linking his demise to his political choice began circulating widely on X (formerly Twitter).
One user, @Omatune, wrote: “He supported tinubu with his full chest. His daughter came here crying that her father has cancer and the people should please, contribute for his medicals. Instead of Nigerians to help this man live again, they asked the family to go to aso Rock and get help from Tinubu. Now, the man has daid. The family is in pains of the loss of their dear one. One Tinubu’s bad governance supporter out. Guess who doesn’t care and doesn’t want to know whether he existed, lived or said….. Tinubu. Lessons.”
Another post by @ScarTissue101 stated: “Sad to hear about Ogogo’s death, but finding out that he supported Tinubu leads to complications. Many others have died because of his political choice and his death can also be linked to that choice!!”
A third user, @el_victor014, questioned whether the late actor had sought help from the president: “I don’t subscribe to don’t talk against dead people. I know Ogogo would have cried to his master, or didn’t he told Tinubu he was sick and needed medical attention. Just curious to know before further conclusion.”
The mockery has drawn sharp condemnation from many Nigerians across political lines. Users have described the comments as lacking basic humanity and warned that politics should not erase empathy for the dead.
Some recalled that cancer does not discriminate on the basis of political affiliation, noting that the late actor Mr Ibu, who supported Peter Obi in 2023, also died after a prolonged illness.
An aide to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier criticised similar online attacks when Ogogo’s illness first became public, describing them as a pattern of targeting sick Nigerians over their political beliefs.
Ogogo’s death has been widely mourned by colleagues in the Yoruba film industry, including Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Femi Adebayo and others.
The Ogun State Government described him as a “spectacular cultural icon,” while former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also sent condolences.
As the late actor is laid to rest, the online exchanges have once again highlighted the deep polarisation that continues to define Nigerian political discourse more than three years after the 2023 general elections.
