How To Verify Your Academic Certificates Online Through FG Portal

Nigerians seeking to authenticate academic certificates or evaluate foreign qualifications can now complete the process online without visiting the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Ministry has moved its Education Sector Support and Services (ESS) processes to the ESSVerify portal, allowing applicants to access several credential-related services remotely.

The online platform covers authentication of Nigerian qualifications, evaluation of certificates obtained outside Nigeria, and verification of documents previously issued by the Ministry.

It also provides access to eligibility or proficiency letters and letters of no objection for individuals, institutions and organisations that require them for official purposes.

The development follows the full digitisation of Education Support Services in April 2026. The exercise brought certificate verification and processes involving foreign applicants online and brought an end to physical verification.

Education Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa, reaffirmed the development on Wednesday, saying applicants no longer need to make physical visits to the Ministry to access the services.

For Nigerians planning to use their academic qualifications abroad, the authentication service confirms that the certificates were genuinely issued by recognised Nigerian institutions.

The evaluation service, on the other hand, is meant for people who obtained their qualifications outside Nigeria but need to present them for official purposes within the country.

Foreign qualification evaluation may be required for employment, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) processes and other government or institutional requirements.

Applicants who need confirmation of their academic suitability for admission or employment can also request an eligibility or English proficiency letter through the portal.

Institutions and organisations seeking official clearance for programmes or partnerships can use the letter of no objection service.

How to verify an ESS document

The portal also provides a separate verification service for checking documents previously issued through Education Sector Support and Services.

Employers, schools, organisations and individuals can use the option to establish whether an ESS-issued certificate or letter is genuine.

To verify a document, users should visit the ESSVerify portal and select the document verification option.

They will then be required to enter the document number shown on the relevant ESS certificate or letter before submitting the request.

The system will subsequently indicate whether the document is authentic.

How to authenticate or evaluate a certificate

Applicants seeking authentication of Nigerian qualifications or evaluation of foreign certificates must begin by selecting “Start an application” on the portal.

New users are required to create an account with a valid email address, verify the email and complete their personal profile.

After logging in, applicants can select the service they need, including Authentication, Evaluation, Eligibility/English Proficiency Letter or Letter of No Objection.

Applicants must provide their personal information and details of the qualification being processed.

They will also select the documents to be processed and provide the required number of pages where applicable.

After completing the application, the system generates a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) for payment. Fees paid through the process are non-refundable.

Applicants must then upload clear and readable scanned copies of all required documents.

Where an official transcript is required, the applicant must contact the registry of the institution that awarded the qualification.

The awarding institution is expected to send the transcript directly to the designated email address as part of the verification process.

The digital system is designed to make academic credential services more accessible while reducing the need for applicants to travel to the Ministry for routine verification and certification procedures.
