Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has hit back at critics of his administration’s use of diesel-powered generators for streetlights, telling President Bola Tinubu that the situation would have been different if his government had fixed Nigeria’s electricity problem.

Makinde made the remarks on Monday at the Boye Nation/JAF Movement Mega Concert at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan, where he received thousands of APC defectors into the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
According to a statement made available to newsmen by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Makinde said those criticising the use of generators should remember Tinubu’s campaign promise on electricity.
The governor said Tinubu had promised Nigerians that he should not be re-elected if he failed to fix the country’s electricity problem within his first four years in office.
“On powering streetlights with diesel generators, remind them that their leader was the one who said that if he didn’t fix Nigeria’s electricity problem within his first four years, no one should vote for him again,” Makinde said.
He added: “If he had fulfilled that promise, we would not be powering streetlights with diesel.”
Makinde’s comments followed criticism from the APC governorship campaign in Oyo State over the use of diesel generators for some streetlights installed by his administration.
The campaign had questioned the governor’s record as an engineer over the project.
Responding, Makinde said the criticism should be viewed against the wider electricity challenge in Nigeria, arguing that reliable national grid supply would eliminate the need for generators to power the streetlights.
