JAMB Clears Confusion On What ‘Not Admitted’, ‘Admission in Progress’ Mean

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has provided further clarification on the admission messages candidates may see while checking their status on the Central Admissions Processing System.

The board explained the implications of three major statuses — “Not Admitted,” “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” — as universities and other tertiary institutions continue their admission exercises.

JAMB, in an explainer video released on Thursday, urged candidates not to draw premature conclusions from their current CAPS status, stressing that the information could change as the process progresses.

It explained that candidates seeing “Not Admitted” should not interpret the message as a final rejection, as it only indicates that no admission offer had been approved for them at that particular time.

The board therefore advised such candidates to keep checking their CAPS portals regularly for any subsequent change in status.

On “Admission in Progress,” JAMB said the status could mean that the candidate had been recommended by the institution but was still awaiting the completion of necessary approval procedures.

It noted that the recommendation could be pending before the head of the institution or awaiting JAMB’s final decision after the institution had endorsed the candidate.

The board cautioned that having “Admission in Progress” displayed on CAPS was not equivalent to receiving a confirmed admission offer, as JAMB could decline the recommendation if the candidate failed to meet stipulated requirements.

According to JAMB, the process is completed when the board approves the offer and changes the candidate’s status to “Admitted.” At that stage, the candidate receives an official congratulatory notification and can accept or reject the offer through CAPS.

JAMB further stated that candidates should continue monitoring their CAPS accounts because admission statuses may be updated at various stages before the exercise is concluded and admission letters become available for printing.

The board advised candidates to obtain information about their admission status only through its official communication channels to avoid being misled by unverified reports.
