Nigerian households and businesses are facing another increase in energy expenses as the price of cooking gas has climbed to N1,500 per kilogramme from N1,200.

The latest 25 per cent increase coincides with rising diesel prices, with Automotive Gas Oil now selling for as much as N2,300 per litre in some locations, adding to the cost of running businesses and household energy needs.
The price changes were reflected in the mid-day depot report released on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, which showed noticeable increases in diesel prices across major petroleum markets.
In Lagos, Ibachem recorded the largest jump among the depots listed, increasing its AGO price by N170 to N2,000 per litre. Ibeto followed with an increase to N1,970, while Duport and Integrated adjusted their prices to N1,940.
Port Harcourt also recorded increases, with African Terminal, Duport and Integrated selling diesel at N1,940 per litre.
Matrix in Warri raised its price to N2,120 from N2,080, the highest figure listed in the report.
The rising diesel cost could further increase expenses for manufacturers, transport operators, telecom companies and small-scale enterprises that rely on diesel generators and vehicles to run their operations.
Petrol prices, however, remained comparatively steady in several markets.
Lagos prices ranged between N1,350 and N1,353 per litre, while some outlets in Calabar and Warri recorded slight reductions.
Lawal Kamaldeen, Vice-President of the Oil and Gas Service Providers Association of Nigeria, said the downstream market remained volatile, with international developments contributing to price fluctuations.
He said the instability could persist in the coming weeks.
