The incident, which occurred on Saturday, October 10, marks the third reported attack on the airport within a week, raising fresh concerns about the safety of passengers and aviation facilities.
According to Saudi authorities, the victims came from several countries. They included four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshis and one citizen each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation confirmed the casualties, adding that all injured victims had been transported to hospitals for medical attention. However, some of them were reported to be in critical condition.
Beyond the human toll, the attack damaged parts of the airport infrastructure. Authorities said assessments were underway to establish the full extent of the destruction.
Consequently, airport operations were temporarily suspended to allow security officials to inspect the affected facilities and determine whether they were safe for use.
The suspension was also intended to protect passengers, airport workers and critical aviation infrastructure from further danger.
Meanwhile, Saudi authorities and the Saudi-led coalition have blamed Yemen’s Houthi movement for the latest assault, according to Reuters.
However, the group had not claimed responsibility for the October 10 attack as of the time of reporting.
The latest incident follows two separate attacks on the same airport on Thursday, which reportedly killed three Saudi nationals and left several others injured.
The repeated attacks have intensified concerns over the security situation in the region as hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis continue.
