Presidential aspirants under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have agreed in principle to support whoever wins the party’s 2027 presidential primary, provided the selection process is transparent.
Former transportation minister and party chieftain, Rotimi Amaechi, disclosed the development in an exclusive interview with Leadership weekend.
He stressed that while there is consensus to back the eventual flagbearer, stakeholders must first clearly define what constitutes a transparent primary to prevent manipulation.
“We all agreed that the winner of a transparent primary will be supported,” Amaechi said.
“But we must also define transparency so no one hijacks the process under that guise.”
The interim national chairman of ADC, Senator David Mark, had earlier assured the public that the party has no preferred candidate and will ensure fairness.
The race for the ADC ticket has seen interest from notable figures like Amaechi, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar.
While Atiku has hinted at another run, he denied claims of attending any meeting where he was asked to step down.
Obi, in a separate interview, confirmed his presidential ambition and ruled out any vice-presidential negotiations.
Former ADC candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, however, alleged the current party leadership was plotting to hand the ticket to Atiku, igniting a fresh debate on zoning, whether power should stay in the South or return to the North.
Despite these controversies, ADC’s national publicity secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, told the aforementioned publication he’s unaware of any such pact but maintained the party is committed to fairness.
“We are determined to provide a level playing ground for all aspirants,” he said.
