The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old man, Kingsley Chinamezu, for allegedly killing his 44-year-old lover, Confidence Sunny, in Etche Local Government Area.
Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed in a statement yesterday that the suspect, popularly known as Power Sharp, attacked the woman with a machete on July 30 in Umuebule community.
According to the statement, Chinamezu fled the state immediately after the incident but continued sending threats to the victim’s family, boasting that he could harm them without facing any consequences.
Following a petition from the deceased’s relatives, Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Olugbenga Adepoju, directed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit (AKU) to handle the case.
The operatives trailed the suspect to his hideout in Egbeta village, Edo State, where he was eventually arrested on Friday.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the killing and explained how the tragic incident unfolded,” Iringe-Koko stated.
She added that investigators were compiling evidence while the suspect undergoes profiling to determine if he is linked to other criminal activities.
Commissioner Adepoju commended the AKU team for their swift action in apprehending the suspect. He assured residents that the command would not allow criminals to destabilize the state.
“No matter how far they run, offenders will be brought to justice. Rivers State will never be a safe ground for criminals,” the police chief said.
The police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities to ensure safety in their communities.
