Tinubu Approves N16.7bn for Reconstruction of Mokwa Bridge

President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the release of N16.7 billion to rebuild the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, which was swept away by flooding earlier in May 2025.

The announcement was made on Saturday by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after a joint briefing with the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.

Idris explained that the approval reflects the administration’s determination to respond swiftly to critical infrastructure challenges across the country.

“This decision means a lot to the people of Niger State and Nigerians at large. The President approved ₦16.7 billion for a 10-span bridge to replace the one destroyed by floods. 

"It is a clear sign that this government listens and acts promptly when citizens are affected,” Idris said in a statement issued by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim.

The minister also praised Umahi for his quick intervention after the bridge collapse, noting that the Works Ministry had dispatched experts immediately to assess the scale of damage.

According to Idris, the development will bring relief to commuters and communities in Niger State who have been cut off since the disaster. 

“This is good news for the state and for Nigeria because road connectivity is vital to economic growth and safety,” he added.

On his part, Umahi described Tinubu as “a leader with compassion who does not delay in addressing the needs of the people.” 

He stressed that the approval for the Mokwa Bridge was part of a wider intervention to restore critical road infrastructure nationwide.

The Works Minister further revealed that similar approvals have been granted for the reconstruction of the five-span bridge in Wukari, Taraba State; the Lokoja Bridge; permanent repairs on the Afikpo Bridge linking Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo States; the Keffi Flyover in Nasarawa; the Jebba Bridge in Kwara; seven bridges in Edo State; and a bridge project in Kebbi.

He assured Nigerians that the projects would be executed without delay, reinforcing the government’s commitment to modernising the nation’s transport infrastructure.
