Resident Doctors Commence Indefinite Strike as Hospitals Shut Nationwide

Resident doctors across the country have commenced an indefinite strike, crippling activities in public hospitals.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) announced the action in a statement issued on Saturday by its President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman.

The strike, according to the association, followed the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum given to the Federal Government to meet its demands.

Dr. Suleiman said the decision became unavoidable after the government repeatedly failed to implement agreements reached with the association despite several meetings and appeals.

He said: “We wish to address you at this critical time as we embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, a decision that did not come lightly, nor was it ever our desire. We are fully aware of the pains and inconveniences that accompany any disruption in healthcare services, and we deeply regret the situation.”

He explained that the association’s demands include fair remuneration, payment of arrears, improved working conditions, adequate staffing, and provision of essential medical infrastructure.

NARD urged Nigerians to support their call for a functional healthcare system, saying their struggle was not for personal gain but for the survival of the nation’s health sector.
