The Federal High Court in Abuja has halted the planned national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) earlier slated to hold in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16.
The convention was expected to produce new national officers for the opposition party, marking a key step in its internal reorganisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
However, the court’s decision has temporarily suspended all preparations for the event, pending the determination of a suit filed by some aggrieved party members challenging the conduct and procedures leading to the convention.
Sources within the party revealed that the ruling caught several stakeholders unprepared, as arrangements had already reached an advanced stage.
“This development may affect our timetable and internal reconciliation process,” one party chieftain said.
As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership had yet to issue an official statement on the ruling.
Party insiders, however, hinted that the National Working Committee (NWC) may convene an emergency meeting to deliberate on the next line of action.
The court’s intervention marks another twist in the PDP’s ongoing leadership tussle, which has continued to test the unity and stability of Nigeria’s main opposition platform.
