U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday warned that the United States could launch military action against Nigeria if the government fails to stop the killing of Christians across the country.
In a strongly worded post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared that Washington would “immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria” and may “go into that now disgraced country, guns-a-blazing, to completely wipe out the Islamic terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
He said he had directed the “Department of War” to prepare for possible intervention, adding that any U.S. strike would be “fast, vicious, and sweet.”
“The Nigerian government better move fast,” Trump wrote, describing the situation as an “existential threat” to Christians.
The statement comes days after Trump announced Nigeria’s redesignation as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious persecution, a move that has stirred diplomatic unease in Abuja and Washington.
Nigerian authorities have consistently dismissed claims of a deliberate campaign against Christians, arguing that violence in the country stems from terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes affecting both Muslims and Christians alike.
As of Saturday evening, the Nigerian government had yet to issue an official response to Trump’s threat.
