The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has stepped down from his position in the cabinet of President Bola Tinubu as he prepares to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the development on Monday through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, stating that the minister had formally stepped down from office.
It was gathered that Tuggar tendered his resignation letter to the President shortly after noon, signalling his intention to pursue his political ambition under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
His exit from the Federal Executive Council is believed to be in compliance with a directive issued earlier in March, mandating political appointees with aspirations for elective offices to vacate their positions.
The directive, conveyed through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, required affected officials to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
Those covered by the order include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, as well as heads of federal agencies.
The move aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and is aimed at avoiding conflicts of interest as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
