Ex-Super Eagles Midfielder, Henry Nwosu Dies At 62

Former Nigerian international midfielder, Henry Nwosu, has died at the age of 62.

The passing of the Imo State-born football legend was announced on Saturday morning by his former teammate and fellow 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Segun Odegbami, through a message shared on his media platforms.

According to Odegbami, Nwosu died in the early hours of Saturday after battling for his life in hospital for several days.

“Henry Nwosu passes on! After five days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, where he had been in intensive care since Wednesday,” Odegbami wrote.

He added, “It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON. May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven.”

Nwosu gained national recognition as the youngest member of Nigeria’s victorious squad at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, where the then Nigeria national football team — then known as the Green Eagles — secured the country’s first continental title on home soil.

Widely admired for his vision, creativity and technical skills in midfield, Nwosu later became a respected figure in Nigeria’s domestic football scene.

After hanging up his boots, the former international remained active in the sport, working as a coach and mentor to help develop younger football talents across the country.
