Residents of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, were Friday night displaced following a heavy rainstorm that wreaked havoc in parts of the ancient city.
Naija Metro News confirmed that heavy rainfall was recorded in several parts of Ibadan on Friday, lasting for hours and accompanied by strong winds.
Several houses and properties worth millions of naira were damaged by the storm, forcing some residents to flee their homes.
The affected communities include Alaaka, Igbonna and other neighbouring areas along the Apete–Awotan–Akufo Road in Ido Local Government Area.
A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred during the downpour on Friday evening.
He called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to come to the aid of victims.
“Some houses were affected in our area as a result of the heavy rain that wreaked havoc in our community. I can count about five buildings, while some other structures were also affected. Some people have been displaced as a result of the incident
“I want to appeal to NEMA and SEMA to please come to the aid of the victims. It will go a long way in assisting them,” the resident said.
The rainstorm also affected operations at Noble 107.1 FM, an Ibadan-based radio station.
Sources said some equipment at the station was damaged, forcing the station off air since the incident.
A staff member of the station, who asked not to be named, confirmed the development.
“I don’t know about other radio stations, but I can tell you that we have been off air since yesterday. The rain affected some of our equipment at Noble 107.1 FM Ibadan. We are currently trying to put things together to get back on air,” the staff said.
Residents have continued to assess the extent of the damage as calls grow for urgent intervention from emergency agencies.
