Alexx Ekubo Finally Laid to Rest in Abia Amid Tears

Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo has been laid to rest in his hometown of Aziukwukwa Ujari Village, Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State, bringing to an end weeks of mourning following his death on May 11 at the age of 40 after a battle with stage 4 kidney cancer.

The actor’s funeral rites began with a service of songs held on June 10 at The Monarch Event Centre in Lekki, Lagos, where colleagues, friends and well wishers gathered in white attire to honour his memory.

On Wednesday, his remains arrived at the family compound in Arochukwu in a convoy of vehicles. Family members and friends gathered for a wake where tributes were paid to the actor. In keeping with local tradition, younger members of the family escorted his remains into the compound while carrying his portrait.

The final funeral rites took place on Thursday. His funeral service was held at Mary Slessor School in Arochukwu before he was interred at the Ekubo Okwaraeke family residence. A reception followed immediately after the burial.

Among those who attended the funeral were actors Nancy Isime, Stan Nze, IK Ogbonna, Bimbo Ademoye, Deyemi Okanlawon, Omoni Oboli and Ayo Makun.

Also present were businessman Obi Cubana, Abia State commissioner for arts, culture and creative economy Matthew Ekwuribe, and the chief of staff to the Abia State governor, Caleb Ajagba.

In an Instagram post after the burial, Oboli confirmed that Ekubo had been laid to rest and announced that proceeds from her upcoming film The First Lady would be donated to the actor’s family.

“We’ve laid our bestie Alex to rest to the glory of God. Thank you Jesus!” she wrote.

Ekubo’s family had earlier announced the funeral arrangements in May, stating that the actor would be buried on June 18 in Arochukwu. The family also thanked fans, friends and colleagues for the support received following his death.

Widely known for his roles in romantic comedies and drama films, Ekubo rose to prominence after emerging first runner up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition and went on to feature in numerous Nollywood productions during a career that spanned more than a decade.
