IPOB Suspends Nnamdi Kanu as Leader

The Indigenous People of Biafra has announced the suspension of the Office of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, alongside the position of Director of Radio Biafra, in a move that signals a major leadership shake-up within the separatist group.

The decision was reached during a meeting of the organisation’s Directorate of State, where members reportedly examined intelligence and developments linked to communications attributed to Kanu from his detention facility in Sokoto State.

In a statement issued  by the Head of the Directorate of State, Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, the group disclosed that the Directorate would henceforth oversee the administration and operations of IPOB.

According to the statement, the organisation was founded and developed through the collective efforts of Biafrans in the diaspora rather than by a single individual, stressing that no person possesses the authority to dissolve the Directorate of State, which it described as the highest decision-making body of the movement.

The leadership explained that its action was prompted by concerns that certain messages allegedly originating from Kanu’s place of detention had exposed members of the group to arrests and other security risks.

It also expressed reservations over reports of attempts by some individuals to establish a separate armed structure, warning that such a development could fuel renewed violence in the South-East.

The Directorate maintained that suspending the offices was necessary to prevent what it described as reckless actions and statements capable of endangering supporters and exposing young people in the region to arrest, torture and loss of life.

It further stated that any unlawful acts carried out in the name of the suspended offices would no longer be attributed to IPOB, insisting that only individuals occupying recognised positions within the organisation could act on its behalf.

The latest development comes barely a day after reports emerged that Kanu had dissolved the existing Directorate of State administration and approved the formation of a new leadership structure.

Under the reported arrangement, United States-based Chris Nwaogu was named head of a newly constituted Directorate of State and assigned responsibility for coordinating the group's activities under Kanu’s authority.

The Directorate of State was established in 2012 as the administrative arm of IPOB.

Over the years, it has been headed by several officials, including Dr Justin Akujieze, Mazi Uchenna Asiegbu and Chika Edoziem, who assumed leadership of the body in 2017 during Kanu’s earlier detention.
