The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday ordered the remand of activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, at the Kuje Correctional Centre following the revocation of his bail.

The order was issued by Justice Mohammed Umar, who had earlier withdrawn the bail granted to Sowore and issued a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for proceedings in an ongoing criminal trial.
Sowore arrived at the court premises on Monday accompanied by supporters carrying placards. Speaking with journalists before the commencement of proceedings, he said he anticipated that the court would order his detention and had come prepared for the outcome.
The activist, who also publishes Sahara Reporters, appeared before the court with a travel bag, indicating his readiness to comply with any decision reached by the judge.
The court had on June 16 revoked his bail after finding that he failed to honour a scheduled court appearance. Justice Umar subsequently approved an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services, Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), seeking a warrant for his arrest.
Sowore is being prosecuted by the Department of State Services over allegations that he made defamatory statements against President Bola Tinubu on his social media platforms.
According to the prosecution, the defendant referred to the President as “a criminal” in posts published on his X account and Facebook page, an allegation that forms the basis of the charges against him.
