The police in Anambra State have arrested a couple after the lifeless bodies of twin infants were discovered inside a drainage channel in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The tragic discovery was made on Sunday morning along Cooperative Street in Nwokedi area, when residents reportedly noticed a box containing the remains of the babies, wrapped in clothing, dumped in the drainage.
Eyewitnesses said the infants’ bodies were exposed in a manner that quickly drew public attention, prompting alarm among passersby who alerted operatives of the Okpoko Police Division.
A resident identified simply as Uche described the incident as deeply disturbing, expressing concern over what she called a growing disregard for human life in the community. She said the act was unacceptable, especially in a society with access to social support systems and childcare facilities.
Another resident suggested the possibility that the infants may have been abandoned by a young woman unable to cope with the responsibility of motherhood, though this remains unverified.
The spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and the subsequent arrest of the biological parents of the deceased infants.
According to him, police operatives responded swiftly after receiving a distress report, secured the scene and launched preliminary investigations that led to the identification and arrest of the suspects.
He said the parents are currently in custody and assisting investigators as efforts continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, was quoted as describing the case as a disturbing act and a violation of the sanctity of human life, stressing that children deserve protection and care at all times.
Ikenga added that the command had intensified its investigation and assured that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
