Dangote to Donate One-third of Fortune to Charity – Daughter

Africa's richest businessman, Aliko Dangote, has set aside one-third of his wealth for charitable causes as part of a long-term succession strategy designed to ensure his philanthropic legacy outlives him, according to his daughter, Halima Dangote.

Halima, who serves as a trustee of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, disclosed that the decision had the full backing of the family. 

She explained that the billionaire deliberately incorporated the donation into his estate planning to guarantee that future generations would continue supporting humanitarian causes.

She noted that her father believes wealth carries a responsibility to improve lives, particularly through investments in healthcare and education.

"My father has always seen philanthropy as more than charity. It is a lifelong commitment to humanity, and he wants that commitment to continue even after him," Halima said.

Based on the latest Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Dangote's fortune is estimated at $35.1 billion, placing the value of the planned charitable allocation at approximately $11.7 billion, assuming his net worth remains at current levels.

Halima explained that the arrangement follows Islamic inheritance principles, under which a person can dedicate up to one-third of an estate to charitable purposes through a will.

"He ensured every necessary structure was established and asked members of the family to endorse the arrangement. 

"It reflects how deeply he believes giving back should remain at the heart of everything we do," she added.

The planned donation builds on decades of charitable work already carried out through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which was created in 1994 to drive social development across Africa.

According to Halima, the foundation received an endowment of $1.25 billion around ten years ago and has since attracted an additional $700 million to expand its humanitarian programmes.

She said the foundation directs roughly 70 per cent of its spending to projects in Nigeria, while another 20 per cent supports initiatives across other African countries. The remaining funds are invested in programmes elsewhere around the world.

Its interventions cover healthcare, education, nutrition, disaster relief and poverty reduction. 

The organisation has also partnered with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and governments in northern Nigeria on vaccination campaigns that contributed to the elimination of wild poliovirus across Africa.

"Success is measured not only by the businesses we build but also by the lives we transform," Halima said. 

"That philosophy has guided the foundation from the beginning."

The announcement comes as billionaire philanthropy continues to attract global attention. 

Although Dangote's planned contribution is below the 50 per cent benchmark associated with the Giving Pledge initiative, analysts believe it would still rank among the largest charitable commitments ever made by an African billionaire.
