Ibrahim, who is from Rikoto in Zuru LGA, was arrested on August 14, 2026, following an investigation into the disappearance of the infant.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 23, 2025, shortly after Fatima Muhammad gave birth.
According to the police, Ibrahim allegedly approached the new mother while pretending to offer assistance. She reportedly told Muhammad that she wanted to fetch hot water for her.
However, instead of returning with the water, the suspect allegedly left the area with the newborn.
Police investigations later uncovered an alleged motive behind the incident.
The Command said Ibrahim had reportedly faced emotional pressure because she had not had a child, while some of her peers had already become mothers.
Investigators further alleged that she had deceived her husband for about nine months by making him believe she was pregnant.
Police said the suspect allegedly saw an opportunity after Muhammad gave birth and decided to take the baby.
She reportedly presented the stolen child to her husband as their biological baby, according to the preliminary findings.
After months of investigation, police operatives eventually traced the suspect and recovered the newborn.
The baby has since been reunited with the biological mother, the police said.
Confirming the development, Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the investigation had helped uncover the circumstances surrounding the alleged theft.
“The child has been safely recovered and reunited with the biological mother,” Usman said.
The suspect remains in police custody as detectives continue with the investigation.
Police said Ibrahim would be prosecuted after the investigation is completed, in line with relevant laws.
The Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, Umar M. Hadejia, also praised the officers involved in the case.
Hadejia commended their persistence and professionalism, particularly in recovering the baby and bringing the alleged offender into custody.
The police command also assured residents that it would continue to protect children and pursue individuals suspected of offences against them.
The case is expected to proceed to court after the completion of the police investigation.
