The attack triggered a fierce exchange of gunfire between the assailants and security operatives attached to the governor, with the confrontation reportedly lasting between 12 and 15 minutes before the attackers fled the scene.
Adeleke had arrived at the Ataoja’s palace at about 3:15pm in a motorcade of about 20 vehicles after leaving the Osun State headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo, where he had received his Certificate of Return following his re-election.
According to an eyewitness, trouble started as the governor’s meeting with the traditional ruler was winding down. Adeleke had reportedly exited the palace hall through a private route and was already in his vehicle with some aides when heavy gunfire suddenly erupted.
The eyewitness alleged that the attackers arrived in an unregistered Sienna bus through the Ita Olokan area of Osogbo and opened fire. Security personnel attached to the governor immediately responded, leading to a gun battle around the palace area.
The exchange of fire reportedly sent residents and traders in the vicinity into panic, with some abandoning their businesses and fleeing the area as the shooting continued.
The attackers eventually fled the scene after the security operatives attached to the governor engaged them in the gun battle. No casualty was immediately reported.
The incident has raised fresh security concerns in Osogbo, coming days after the governorship election and shortly after Adeleke received his Certificate of Return for a second term in office.
