Messi reached the landmark on Sunday night when he stepped up from just outside the penalty area and produced a trademark left-footed effort.
The Argentine’s free-kick went around the wall, struck the post and crossed the line despite goalkeeper CJ dos Santos’ attempt to keep it out.
The goal came in the 24th minute, 12 minutes after San Diego had taken the lead through Anders Dreyer.
Dreyer opened the scoring after Jeppe Tverskov released him with a through pass. The Danish forward then lifted the ball over Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Messi’s response restored parity and also marked his 20th MLS goal of the 2026 season.
The strike was also the 39-year-old forward’s 75th career goal directly from a free-kick, adding another milestone to his remarkable scoring record.
It was an equally significant night for Messi at club level. The goal took his Inter Miami tally to 101, only four days after he scored his 100th goal for the club against Cruz Azul in the Campeones Cup.
Fabrizio Romano also noted the milestone in a post on X, highlighting Messi’s 930 career goals, 75 free-kick goals and 101 goals for Inter Miami.
Inter Miami appeared to have completed the comeback in the 74th minute when Luis Suárez put the hosts ahead for the first time.
San Diego, however, fought back before the final whistle.
Dreyer struck again in the 82nd minute to complete his brace and rescue a 2-2 draw for the visitors.
The result means Inter Miami have now drawn four consecutive MLS matches.
The club sits on 46 points from 26 matches, with 12 wins, 10 draws and four defeats.
For Messi, the latest goal provides another landmark in a career that continues to produce major scoring records, even as he enters the later stages of his playing career.
