NiMet Predicts Three Days of Rain, Thunderstorms Nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned of widespread thunderstorms and rainfall in different parts of Nigeria from Monday through Wednesday, with strong winds likely to accompany some of the storms.

According to the agency’s latest weather forecast issued in Abuja on Sunday, several states across the northern, central and southern parts of the country are expected to experience varying degrees of rainfall during the period.

NiMet said parts of Taraba and Kebbi could record thunderstorms and light rain on Monday morning, while more areas in the North-East, Kaduna, Taraba and Kebbi were expected to experience moderate rainfall later in the day.

The agency also forecast morning thunderstorms over parts of Niger State, followed by moderate rain across much of the North-Central region in the afternoon or evening. In the South, cloudy conditions with isolated thunderstorms were expected in parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

For Tuesday, NiMet projected cloudy conditions in parts of the North during the morning, with thunderstorms and light rain in some areas of Taraba. More widespread moderate rainfall was expected across the region later in the day.

The forecast also indicated thunderstorms and moderate rain in parts of the FCT, Niger, Nasarawa and Plateau states, while parts of Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia and the South-South were expected to experience thunderstorms and light rain.

By Wednesday, NiMet said parts of Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba could experience morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall, with similar conditions expected across much of the North later in the day. 

The South was also forecast to receive thunderstorms and moderate rain.

The agency urged residents to secure loose objects because of possible strong winds, avoid travelling during heavy downpours and disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms. 

It also advised people to keep away from tall trees and urged airline operators to obtain location-specific weather information for safe flight planning.
